Early Los Angeles Modernists, 1920-1956, by Paul J. Karlstrom and Susan Ehrlich. Turning the Tide surveys twenty artists, who between the years of 1920 and 1956 actively created modernist art in a climate of conservative aesthetic taste. Confrontation, frustration, and even political opposition were familiar obstacles to these artists as they attempted to turn the tide from the prevalent Eucalyptus School landscape tradition to an understanding and appreciation of modernism.
